A day to celebrate…by doing good

·

On this 4th of July week, we should celebrate the good things that people do. We should all do what we can to pay it forward and help someone who’s doing it tough at the moment. Im going to tell you about a fantastic idea that I have only just heard about.  I love it.

While we see a hell of a lot of people on the street and seemingly increasing every day, there are also a hell of a lot that we don’t see. These are the so called lucky ones that have a car to sleep in or a friend’s couch they can sleep on.  Many of these people are women that have young children.  Many of their kids go to school like everyone else and you’d never realize they live in a car or are homeless.

I have seen figures that suggest that only as few as 4% are actually visibly homeless like those people we see on our streets.  If that is the case, the homeless numbers would be really frightening.  The figures show that there are actually 554,000 people living on the streets in the united states every night.  If the 4% figure is even close to correct, that would equate to some 14 million people actually homeless.

This idea is from a café called Ka-Fey, which is a kind of cute name.  When people buy their coffee or other beverage and a sandwich or a muffin, they can pay for an extra drink or meal and they print out the docket to pass onto someone who is in need of food or drink.

The customer then pins the paid docket on the display board on the wall of the restaurant.  Someone who is in need, simply picks a food or drink docket from the wall and presents it to the restaurant staff instead of money. This is an honesty system relying on karma to stop it being mistreated!  The great news is that the system has never been abused and literally thousands of people have been assisted.

When you think that some people just need a time out from their difficult life to feel normal for a while and the café and their fabulous customers help provide this.  They have already had some amazingly generous food and coffee donations from their regular customers and local businesses. If you are close by, drop in a spend some time with these fabulous people. I’m sure you will love their company.

I hope you have a fabulous 4th of July…live large.

Nine girls were in a running race.  After 15 yards, one girl fell and due to her injuries, she began to cry.  The other 8 girls ran back to help.  Then they all linked arms with the injured girl and walked across the finish line together to a huge roar from spectators.True story…happened in Hyderabad, India.  They were mentally challenged.  What does this teach us?
