SHOW TITLE: Bill Gates to build a 182,000 people smart city
My guest today is Dutch artist Robert Driessen, who is regarded as the most successful art forger and one that the European authorities sought to arrest. But while Robert’s German accomplices sat in prison, he was free until his arrest and conviction
The police sought him in Europe for art crimes. Robert Driessen forged some 1000 paintings by various artists and 1300 sculptures by the Swiss sculptor Alberto Giacometti despite the fact that Giacometti produced no more than 500 unique pieces. Two of his accomplices were in prison in Germany, and Driessen was the only member of the gang still at large.
Driessen was eventually captured, convicted and sentenced to prison
He spent more than 30 years forging art, including paintings and sculptures, and has lived well on the proceeds. We found him running a small cafe in Thailand with Roman Abramovich’s luxury yacht anchored in the bay nearby.
